Some may to take a look for fun with friends. Otherwise, his wife threatened his husband to come to Jesus asking the pray for him. Some may have an expectation to be healed from the malignant disease. Others such as teachers of law may come to check the words of Jesus with doubt. Others may want to see whether Jesus may be a deceiver. Although people come to Jesus, they have a various purposes. This is the case for these days.
The church is a home where Jesus comes to. However, the church is not a building. If the church is the building, it does not make sense when the small church is closed. Although the church building may be closed, the people of God still worship in other place. The Lord made us a promise to be with us. So the church is the place where people gather in the name of Jesus. So, two persons come here in the name of Jesus to worship, which means that our Lord is present. A meeting with three persons in the name of Jesus is also a church. I believe that it is a blessing to experience of the presence of the Lord. We thus encourage one another to meet together in the name of Jesus. The bible said, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching (Hebrews 10:25)’. Let’s NOT give up meeting together.
Why people come to the church?
Some may come to the church for God’s blessing, for obtaining the peace of mind, or for appeasing the loneness. Some may come to the church for curing physical and spiritual diseases. Some may come to the church to hear the Word of Lord eagerly. Some may come to the church for praising the LORD by observing the Sunday worship service. Some may come to the church because of the habit for a long time. Some may come to the church for preventing bad thing in one’s life. Some may come here to see friends. Some may come to check whether leaders in the church teach the bible well or rightly. Some may come to the church to analyze the sermon. What we see is the LORD’s home is filled with people who have various purposes. What shall we do? I believe that it is important to consider one another. Consideration means that we do not criticize the people because they are on our side. Consideration means that we see other people with their perspective. It is a good practice to consider one another in the LORD.
I had a question someday; ‘Why I was here?’ Do you know when? When I raised the kids, I had a big question. Actually, my wife probably had more hard time than I did at that time. I believe that all mothers who had babies had similar question when they raised their kids. It is so difficult for parents to focus on worship because the babies usually don’t consider their parents. They are crying when they want to do. They are laughing when they want to do. If they hungry, they cry. The curious baby eats the weird something if the parents lose the attention for a second. Once the babies start to walk, they touch everything what they want to know.
So, during the worship service, it may be fine if a mother sits on any place. The worship service has done during struggling with baby. So a mother with baby didn’t remember the message what she supposed to hear. Then, a thought cross the mothers’ minds ‘what I doing here?” People who are in 30 years old ages may learn the patient in their lives. However, I believe that God loves the mothers’ hearts to hear the Word of God, to thirst God’s wisdom, and to worship HIM. Please, pray for the mothers. Please, understand some noises generated from babies. It is our life.
People who have to meet the Lord.
Let’s image the home where Jesus stayed. The home was full of people who want to meet the Lord. Some of them might need the LORD’s help. He was a paralytic. People brought a paralytic to show to Jesus. Because of crowdedness, however, there was no way to come the LORD. Although the paralytic is an urgent person who must see the Lord, nobody had any attention to him. The friends of the paralytic asked a favor to people. No consideration was happened because they also want to see the LORD. They might say, “We also want to see the Lord! We also want to hear the Word of the Lord!’ No way was opened for the paralytic to see the LORD.
How about us? How about our places? May we open the way to the people who needs Jesus? May we pay attention to the people who really need to meet Jesus as a Savior? Because we love to see Jesus, we may not recognize that we may block the people such as the paralytic. We have to remember this: there are some people who urgently need to meet Jesus. Do you know whom? Please, pray for them. Our church should open the way for people such as the paralytic.
Because I had few experience about the paralytic in my relatives, I didn’t realize how severe the paralysis is. After studying this disease a little bit, I recognize how dangerous the paralysis is. Paralysis called by a stroke may cause a death. Even though some may be survived, they may not move or speak freely. Surprising to me, stroke is the second disease resulting in one’s death among Korean.
A health person suddenly cannot speak and move anymore. It is a shock experience personally and also one’s family who take care of the patient. Since the family member has to take care of a person for a long time, the life style of one’s family would be changed completely. So one said, “Paralysis is a breaker of happiness” Paralysis takes away one’s happiness right away. To prevent the stroke, a doctor propose that dramatic change in emotion(such as anger, sadness, exciting, sorrow, burden, and surprising) needs to be escape, and also it is important to keep the calm status through the pray and meditation. Doctor says, not me, which prayer is very helpful to prevent the stroke.
Good friend meet in the faith.
So, the stroke is very disaster disease because one will suffer from stroke for years and years. Although a person may live for a long, his/her life is hopefulness. In addition, the person who suffers the stroke in the today’s reading is a young person. Let’s look at the ver. 5, Jesus called him, ‘Son’. Because Jesus began his ministry at 30 years old, the paralytic should be younger than Jesus. Thus, it is very sad to have a malignant disease at the dawn of the life. However, he had a good friend who helped him a lot. Especially, they have strong faith to Jesus. They believed that Jesus would heal their friend immediately. Such faith gives a new thought to make a new way. They had a will to make a new way if there was no way to see Jesus for their poor friend. It is very creative thinking.
Since the four people hang up a patient at the roof, this means that the roof seems to be relatively easy to access. In fact, the roof of the house at that time was flat. Since people at home didn’t recognize what’s going on for a while, it may easy to break through the roof because the roof may design to escape the rain. Though the behavior of the paralytic’s friends is very challenging, we understand their will to see Jesus for healing their poor friend. The Lord didn’t revoke their behavior, but pleased them. This happening seemed to be shock to the other people, especially, Jesus’ disciplines. They recorded this story at the book of Matthew 9 and of Luke 5.
It is thankful to have friends who have strong faith. Let’s make faithful friends. When you are in trouble, you can pray for it with your friends. When you are in sadness, your friends are in sorrow. When you are in joy, your friends will rejoice. Most of all, I wish that you have friend s who can understand the way of God, but not way of the world. You can be a friend with a strong faith in God.

It doesn’t matter how you are rich. It doesn’t matter how strong you are. It doesn’t matter how you have an expertise in some area. It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old. Once you suffer from a stroke, everything flies away. This is the case for sin. Whether you are old or young, whether you are rich or poor, whether you studied a lot or little, these are useless once you commit sins. Because of sins, we and our family should have a hard time. If we are afraid of the stroke, we have to afraid the sins. This is a spiritual meaning that we have to learn from the story of paralysis. Sins give us hard time, and also our close friends. Please, remember that sins are like the paralysis.
Thus, we have to experience something at church, which is the forgiveness of the Lord. “Son, your sins are forgiven’ I pray that you will hear this voice in your ear. This is what the LORD wants to say. This is the reason the Lord died at the cross. His intension is to forgive our sins and to give a new life like the paralytic of today’s scripture.
Brothers and sisters who are in the place our Lord dwells. I pray that God cures you if you suffer from diseases. I pray that God gives you healthy and your children are well. I pray that God leads you when you are looking for the next step. I pray that God gives you peace in your home. And more importantly, I pray that you hear this phrase Jesus said to the paralytic in your ear, “Son, your sins are forgiven’ You should hear this phrase in your life.
